Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, New York, NY

JOHN is a partner in the Restructuring Department of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP in New York, where he focuses his practice on representing debtors, equity owners, creditor groups and distressed investors in a broad range of restructuring matters, including chapter 11 cases, cross-border insolvency matters, out-of-court restructurings and bankruptcy-related acquisitions. He has a broad range of experience across a number of industries, including media and communications, health care, retail, energy and manufacturing.

John is recognized as a top practitioner by The Legal 500 and as a “Rising Star” and “Top Rated Bankruptcy Attorney” by Super Lawyers. His work on Carlson Travel’s prepackaged chapter 11 cases was recently recognized as the “Pre-Pack Restructuring (Large)” winner for The Turnaround Atlas Awards in 2022. He also received ABI’s Medal of Excellence in the Study of Debtor-Creditor Law. More recently, he was named to Lawdragon’s 2023 and 2024 list of “500 Leading Bankruptcy & Restructuring Lawyers,” which recognizes the top U.S. attorneys helping companies navigate ailing economies and uncertain times, and to the “500 X – The Next Generation 2023” list, which recognizes future leaders in the legal profession. He also recently co-authored “Third Circuit Definitively Rejects Triangular Setoff,” published in Pratt’s Journal of Law.

John’s recent experiences, such as balancing survivor compensation with the survival of the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club, have reinforced his commitment to seeing beyond financials to human impact. While advising the historic New York City youth club, he saw how each decision in the bankruptcy rippled through lives of abuse survivors as well as the children whom the club serves. Within Paul, Weiss, he has overhauled the restructuring associates’ training program in recent years, shifting from a high-level approach to one that provides practical skills that enable associates to hit the ground running. The redesigned program has a sharper focus on practicality, innovation and strategy while diving into real-world complexities, equipping associates with practical tools to navigate the unique challenges of insolvency practice. He also teaches associates how to assess precedent, identify possible pitfalls, and better understand liability management transactions. Outside of the office, he teaches a restructuring course at George Washington Law, which allows him to nurture his students’ potential interest in a restructuring career. A member of the firm’s Recruiting Committee, he also devotes substantial time to finding the industry’s best talent, including meeting candidates for on-campus interviews and mentoring summer associates.
