Ballard Spahr LLP, Wilmington, DELAUREL is a partner with Ballard Spahr LLP in Wilmington, Del., where she focuses her practice on corporate bankruptcy and restructuring, commercial bankruptcy, and workout and restructuring matters. She represents corporations as debtors and debtors-in-possession in chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, as well as commercial retail landlords, trade vendors, committees, and purchasers of assets in § 363 sales, regularly counseling clients on their rights in bankruptcy cases, in addition to negotiating lease amendments, agreements and settlements. She also is experienced in bankruptcy-related litigation and issues at the intersection of environmental and bankruptcy law. Her client representations have included the City of Chester, Pa., in its chapter 9 bankruptcy proceedings; commercial landlords within the chapter 11 cases of Claire’s, Big Lots, WeWork, Rite Aid, rue21, Express, Red Lobster, Bed Bath & Beyond, David’s Bridal, Christmas Tree Shops, Cineworld, Party City, Toms King, Chuck E. Cheese, JC Penney, Stage Stores, California Pizza Kitchen, Ascena, Guitar Center, Belk, Ruby Tuesday, J Crew, Bar Louie, Craftworks, Sears, Bon-Ton and J&M; and trade vendors in the cases of FTX, Pipeline Foods, Talen Energy, Southern Foods and Westinghouse. Previously, she was an associate with Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor and clerked for Hon. Mary F. Walrath of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
Laurel is the Bankruptcy Section chair for the Delaware State Bar Association and a member of the Local Rules Committee for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, a barrister for the Delaware Bankruptcy American Inn of Court, and a member of ABI, the International Women’s Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation, the Turnaround Management Association and the International Council of Shopping Centers. She is listed in Chambers USA’s “Up and Coming,” list for Bankruptcy/Restructuring (Delaware) for 2025, was listed in The Best Lawyers in America’s “Ones to Watch” list for Litigation - Bankruptcy (Wilmington) from 2021-24, was listed as a Legal 500 Finance - Restructuring (Including Bankruptcy): Municipal “Rising Star” in 2024, and was named a “Next Gen. Partner” in 2025. In addition, she is named in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” list for 2025, and was named a “Rising Star” by IFLR 1000 for Restructuring and Insolvency in 2024. Admitted to practice in Delaware and New York and a frequent speaker at ABI conferences, she received ABI’s Medal of Excellence in 2011 and was named a Second Circuit American College of Bankruptcy Distinguished Law Student. She also received the Benjamin Weintraub and Alan Resnick Bankruptcy Law Award in 2011.
Laurel has an active pro bono practice, most recently representing a transgender inmate in a men’s correctional facility in Delaware who was the subject of harassing and humiliating strip-searches. Through a lawsuit against the Department of Corrections, she helped obtain a complete overhaul of Delaware’s policy on the intake, housing and treatment of transgender inmates, and the reporting of any policy violations. She also is passionate about the advancement of women and diverse lawyers and other professionals in the restructuring industry.
