Matthew L. Brod

MATTHEW is a partner in the New York office of Milbank LLP and a member of the firm’s Financial Restructuring Group. His practice focuses on the representation of creditors and debtors in chapter 11 cases and out-of-court restructurings. He also represents hedge funds and other financial institutions acquiring control positions in financially distressed companies. His engagements have ranged across a wide array of industries, including energy, oil & gas, chemicals, shipping, health care, retail, airline, technology, financial services, pharmaceuticals and satellite. He has advised on some of the largest bankruptcy matters in recent years, including Ligado, J. Crew, Garrett Motion and Grupo Aeroméxico, and he co-led the firm’s representation of senior lenders in connection with the recapitalization of Sinclair Broadcast Group, the largest owner of Fox-, NBC-, CBS- and ABC-affiliated stations.

From 2019-23, Matthew was included in Benchmark Litigation’s “40 and Under Hot List,” which honors the achievements of the nation’s most accomplished litigators under 40. From 2020-23, he was named a “Next Generation Partner” in Restructuring (including Bankruptcy) by Legal 500. He also co-authors the Lexis Practice Advisor guide on out-of-court corporate restructurings. Prior to joining Milbank, he was a special assistant corporation counsel with the Office of Corporation Counsel in the New York City Law Department, where he worked in the Special Litigation Unit of the Tort Division. He conducted statutory hearings and appeared on behalf of the City at depositions and drafted motions for summary judgment.

Outside of the office, Matthew co-leads the Financial Restructuring Group’s pro bono initiatives, including securing a favorable settlement for an elderly, disabled widow who was the victim of fraudulent investment practices by a former investment advisor. He also collaborates with organizations like the Bronx Defenders and Her Justice on a variety of matters.
