Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP, Cleveland, OH

MAURA is a senior associate in the Restructuring & Insolvency Practice Group of Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP in Cleveland. Her practice focuses on financial restructuring, corporate trust matters, and workout proceedings on behalf of financially distressed companies or their creditors, including the representation of debtors, indenture trustees, creditors and creditors’ committees, investors, and purchasers in in-court and out-of-court restructurings. She also has trust indenture experience, which has included the representation of indenture trustees in chapter 11 cases, negotiations with ad hoc bondholder groups, and advising indenture trustees with respect to obligations in matters concerning defaulted securities. In addition, she is experienced in drafting and negotiating forbearance agreements and instruments to implement out-of-court restructuring transactions, including transactions involving capital-raises, debt-for-equity exchanges and Article 9 out-of-court sales.

Maura has completed several local and insolvency leadership programs, including the NCBJ’s NextGen Class of 2022 and Ladder Down Cleveland Class of 2023, a year-long in-person program that provides direct training and career development through a combination of coaches, sponsors and participants to empower women lawyers in leadership, business development and mentoring. She is one of a handful of attorneys working to revive the Northeast Ohio chapter of the International Women’s Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC). After reconstituting the chapter in 2024, the chapter held its first official event at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. An ABI member and a frequent writer and speaker, she was recently recognized in Legal 500 as a Leading Associate in the Municipal Restructuring category for 2024 and 2025. She also has co-chaired the Cleveland Office Associates Committee at her firm for the past two and a half years, and she is the associate liaison for the Central Region of Squire Women’s Affinity Network.

As an immigrant who aspired to become a lawyer at a time when her path to naturalization was uncertain, Maura’s road to becoming a restructuring and insolvency attorney began when she participated in the 1L LCLD Scholars Program of the Leadership Counsel on Legal Diversity (LCLD) under the mentorship of a restructuring attorney in the Asset Recovery unit of PNC Bank, NA. Outside of the office, she is a member of the board of trustees of the Cleveland Transplant House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing low-cost housing for organ or bone marrow transplant recipients and their caregivers during their visit to Cleveland for transplant procedures. She chairs its Governance Committee and secured pro bono counsel for the organization to negotiate and close on the purchase of a rowhouse building. She also is invested in developing the legal talent pipeline within her firm and in the Northeast Ohio community, and she has conducted on-campus interviews for Case Western University School of Law for the last three consecutive years and participated on the Following the Legal Pipeline panel at the 2020 Northeast Ohio Summit on Diversity in the Legal Profession. She also recently partnered with the Greater Cleveland Partnership and Team Northeast Ohio to plan and co-host a career day for students from four Cleveland Metropolitan School District high schools.
