Daniel Newman
Tonkon Torp LLP, Portland, ORDANNY is a partner in Tonkon Torp LLP’s Litigation Department in Portland, Ore., where he focuses his work on bankruptcy, reorganization and insolvency and co-chairs the firm’s Government Law & Disputes Practice Group. He has been an estate professional for some of the largest chapter 11 cases in the Pacific Northwest, representing debtors, receivers and creditors of all kinds in state court litigation and out-of-court workouts. He also built and promoted the firm’s expertise in crypto assets and NFTs, especially as it relates to insolvency issues, leading to an engagement as ad hoc committee counsel in the BlockFi Inc. chapter 11 case. Previously, he clerked for Hon. Richard C. Tallman at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, where he focused on the circuit’s civil appeals. Prior to that clerkship, he worked on large and complex bankruptcy cases, bet-the-company commercial and energy litigation, and government anti-corruption and bribery investigations in the Houston office of Paul Hastings LLP. In his first job out of law school, he clerked for Hon. Xavier Rodriguez at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio, where he assisted with all aspects of civil litigation, from motions to dismiss through trial, as well as with criminal substantive motions and trials.
Danny initially began practicing in the litigation and white-collar department at Paul Hastings, then quickly switched to insolvency and restructuring work when he got more exposure to it and realized the opportunity, complexity and potential it has to bring real value to clients. Since 2022, he has been listed as an “Oregon Rising Star” by Super Lawyers and as one of the “Ones to Watch” by The Best Lawyers in America in the fields of Litigation – Bankruptcy and Commercial Litigation. He teaches a negotiations class for Lewis & Clark Law School as an adjunct professor, and he previously co-taught negotiations seminars at Gonzaga Law and at South Texas College of Law Houston. He is a member of ABI and the Multnomah Bar Association.
Danny maintains an active pro bono practice, including participating in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Oregon’s pro bono panel, forming and advising nonprofit clients and pursuing civil rights claims on behalf of a variety of clients. After serving on the Pioneer Courthouse Historical Society, he is now president of its board of directors, which includes every active judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals who sits in Oregon. In addition, as part of its 2022 class, he participated in the Portland Business Alliance’s Leadership Portland program, which is designed to cultivate and develop community leaders. Each participant in the program worked on a group “Impact Project” on behalf of a nonprofit. His volunteer service also extends to serving on the board of directors of the Oregon Health Justice Center, a nonprofit law center focused on improving patient health through trauma-informed legal care in medical/ legal partnerships. In addition, he is a former member of the board of trustees for Oregon Parks Forever, a nonprofit working to fund programs and projects that enhance the experience of using Oregon’s parks and forests, and he invests significant time at his firm advising and mentoring younger attorneys in bankruptcy, litigation, negotiation and pro bono matters.
