Bradley D. Jones

Stinson LLP, Washington, D.C.

BRAD is a Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights partner with Stinson LLP in Washington, D.C., and focuses his practice on advising debtors, creditors and trustees of their rights and remedies. His cases span a variety of industries and business sizes. An experienced trial attorney and an appointed chapter 11 trustee, he litigates fraudulent transfer, preference and other recovery disputes in hearings before U.S. bankruptcy courts, and he defends appeals to district and appellate courts. He also represents parties in commercial disputes outside of bankruptcy. Prior to entering private practice, he was a trial attorney for the U.S. Trustee Program, serving as counsel of record in more than 650 bankruptcy cases in matters involving health care, commercial real estate and internet technology. He also served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, assisting with white-collar criminal prosecutions involving bankruptcy.

Brad is a fixture in the bankruptcy bar in the Eastern District of Virginia and District of Columbia, and has served on the local rules committees in both districts. He serves on the amicus committee of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, and he has been a speaker at and served on advisory boards of ABI conferences. He also serves on the board of the Walter Chandler American Inn of Court, a bankruptcy-focused organization in Washington, D.C. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Bankruptcy and Creditor/Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law from 2024-25, was included in Arlington Magazine’s 2019 and 2022 lists of “Top Attorneys” for Legal Aid/Pro Bono and in Virginia Business Magazine’s List of 2021 “Legal Elite” for Bankruptcy/Creditors’ Rights, and has participated in the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges Next Generation Program. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia, before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel, before several district and bankruptcy courts, and before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Brad has authored amicus briefs on important bankruptcy issues, including a brief on behalf of retired bankruptcy judges and a law professor on the application of PROMESA’s bankruptcy stay and plan injunction on civil rights litigation against the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and a brief on behalf of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, arguing that bankruptcy trustees are not prevented from pursuing litigation claims that debtors fail to schedule due to judicial estoppel. He also co-founded a bankruptcy clinic serving the Alexandria, Va., Bankruptcy Court that is currently managed by George Mason University School of Law. The clinic operates as a free resource for anyone with questions or problems related to bankruptcy, especially for individual consumers who typically cannot afford to engage an attorney, and it provides bankruptcy externship opportunities for George Mason law students. Outside of the office, he maintains an active pro bono practice, having represented a student loan debtor appealing the denial of his religious tithing expenses on First Amendment Free Exercise and statutory grounds, and a debtor in defense of denial of discharge actions filed by the D.C. Government and a court-appointed receiver. In addition, he has presented First Amendment and contract law issues to high school students to introduce them to law as a potential career path.
