He has extensive experience in restructurings across a variety of industries, including retail, energy, tourism, transportation and municipal debt restructurings. His recent accomplishments include leading numerous aspects of the representation of the Government of Puerto Rico in its historic restructuring, including personally leading six exchange offers under Title VI of PROMESA; arguing twice before the U.S. Court of Appeals in 2024 and securing a victory before the First Circuit in a Puerto Rico-related appeal regarding the validity of a bond issuance; and obtaining a 100 percent recovery for unsecured creditors in Millenkamp Cattle.

Matthew began his legal career as a legal intern at both the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York’s Criminal Division and the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Enforcement Division, as a judicial intern for Hon. Jed S. Rakoff of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and as a congressional office intern for the Office of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. In law school, he was a member of his school’s Law Review and Moot Court, arriving in first place at a national competition.

Matthew is passionate about his pro bono work, particularly regarding immigration and asylum-seekers. Among his representations, he obtained asylum for a gay man from Russia who was beaten to near death when outed; special immigration juvenile status for a young man from El Salvador who was in a van that flipped over during a high-speed chase at the U.S./Mexico border; and special immigration juvenile status for a young girl from Honduras who came to the U.S. to escape severe gang violence and threats to her life. At his firm, he spearheaded the launch of its Special Credit and Liability Management Group this year, an interdisciplinary group that blends corporate and litigation expertise. For the past several years, he also has served as head of the summer program for the firm’s New York office, which was recently recognized by Vault as the “Best Summer Associate Program,” and he is a member of the firm’s Employment Committee, through which he mentors young attorneys, leads trainings and recruits associates to the Restructuring group. Outside of the office, he helps give back to philanthropic causes, including raising more than $50,000 for the California wildfires.
