Mr. Marc Swanson

Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, PLC, Detroit, MI

MARC represents debtors, lenders, creditors, equityholders and unsecured creditors’ committees, and he has experience in the municipal, energy, automotive, banking and building supply industries. He has argued and won two bankruptcy appeals at the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals for the City of Detroit, one of which sought to unravel the City’s entire bankruptcy plan and Grand Bargain; the other appeal challenged the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s ability to collect past-due bills and set its rates. He also successfully represented the City at the U.S. Supreme Court in the appeal of its bankruptcy plan.

Marc’s path to an insolvency career began when he was a summer intern for U.S. Senator Carl Levin, who was investigating Enron’s collapse. Reviewing boxes of documents to assist in the investigation intrigued him and set the course for his career. He co-founded the Debtor/Creditor Rights section of the Detroit Bar Association, serving as its vice chair, and in 2018, he was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America for Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization. He is also co-chair of the Debtor/Creditor Rights section of the Michigan State Bar Association and vice chair of the Debtor/Creditor Rights section of the Detroit Bar Association, and in 2019, he was elected to serve on the board of directors for the Detroit Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association. In addition, he frequently speaks at restructuring conferences and seminars and publishes articles on insolvency-related topics.

In his community, Marc is a member of Leadership Detroit, an initiative of the Detroit Regional Chamber. He also serves on the board of Cass Community Social Services, a nonprofit based in Detroit that provides housing, food, health services and job programs.
