LAURA is a partner in the firm’s Bankruptcy and Restructuring Group, where she represents financial institutions, bondholders, hedge funds and other creditors in complex bankruptcy proceedings, out-of court restructurings and distressed transactions involving for-profit and nonprofit entities, as well as municipalities. She counsels parties in virtually all aspects of sophisticated restructurings, including in connection with distressed investment opportunities, § 363 sales, UCC Article 9 sales and consensual foreclosures, and event-driven acquisitions. Additionally, she provides advice on potential bankruptcy implications in both corporate transactions and municipal bond offerings.Laura’s representations involve a variety of industries, including agriculture, aviation and mining. Additionally, she regularly advises clients on issues surrounding municipal distress and insolvency, including relating to cities, states and U.S. territories, as well as health care, special municipal districts and higher-education institutions. Prior to law school, Laura was a legislative assistant to a U.S. Senator, and she uses this experience and her understanding of federal, state and local governments to help guide clients in municipal-distress situations. She is also a prolific author and speaker, and co-authored a widely cited municipal finance industry resource, Municipalities in Distress? How States and Investors Deal with Local Government Financial Emergencies.Laura dedicates her time to community service and has worked on numerous asylum cases. She also mentors students at the University of Michigan Law School and led a team at her firm that organized a career-development panel for the firm’s female clients. In addition, she is a member of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and received its Pro Bono Achievement Award.
